Rome in a weekend

3 days is the sweet spot: hit the icons without hating the queues

Rome is unbeatable on paper and brutal in August. Aim for shoulder season, base yourself in Monti or Trastevere (not Termini), and book the Vatican + Colosseum online — walk-up queues eat 2h of your weekend.

Flight from London
2h 30m — €90–140 return
Weekend cost for two
€500–850 for 2

The plan

  1. 1
    Friday evening

Land FCO, take the Leonardo Express to Termini (€14, 32 min) or Kiwitaxi €55 fixed. Aperitivo in Monti.

  2. 2
    Saturday morning

Colosseum + Roman Forum (skip-the-line ticket, book 3 weeks out). Lunch: pizza al taglio at Bonci.

  3. 3
    Saturday afternoon

Pantheon, Trevi, Spanish Steps — all walkable. Gelato at Giolitti.

  4. 4
    Saturday night

Dinner in Trastevere (Da Enzo al 29 — arrive 19:30 or queue). Nightcap at Freni e Frizioni.

  5. 5
    Sunday morning

Vatican Museums + Sistine Chapel (pre-booked, first slot 09:00). St Peter's Basilica after.

  6. 6
    Sunday night

Testaccio for authentic Roman dinner (Flavio al Velavevodetto).

Book before you fly

Vatican Museums first-slot + Colosseum skip-the-line on Tiqets or GetYourGuide. Non-negotiable April–October.

The honest downside

The 64 bus (Termini → Vatican) is Europe's most-pickpocketed. Walk it or take the metro.
