Val Thorens

Europe's highest resort, linked to the world's biggest ski area

Val Thorens is the safest snow bet in the Alps — the whole village sits at 2,300m, so December openings are reliable when lower resorts are grass. Your lift pass covers all of Les 3 Vallées: Courchevel, Méribel and 600km of linked runs. Best for intermediates who want to actually ski somewhere new every day.

Why go

  • Ski-in/ski-out from almost every hotel
  • 6 terrain parks and Europe's longest zip-line
  • Legendary après at La Folie Douce (mountain-top champagne)
  • Direct TGV from Paris to Moûtiers, then 1h transfer
Getting there

Fly Geneva (GVA), Lyon (LYS) or Chambéry (CMF). Book Kiwitaxi shared shuttle 4 weeks out — €80 vs €300 for private.

Après-ski

La Folie Douce (mountain-top DJ champagne), Malaysia in the resort, Le Sax for live bands

Non-negotiable for a ski week

Snowsports travel insurance

Standard travel policies exclude skiing. Add the winter-sports rider or a dedicated policy — a mountain rescue can be €10,000+ out of pocket.

The honest downside

Village architecture is 70s concrete — you're here for the snow, not the charm. Book Val Cenis or Val d'Isère for chocolate-box looks.
