The AlpsSerious alpinism, Mont Blanc under your nose, real town year-round

Chamonix

The alpinist's mecca — not a purpose-built resort, but a real town

Chamonix isn't one ski area — it's five separate mountains around a real Alpine town, plus the Aiguille du Midi cable-car up to 3,842m where the Vallée Blanche off-piste descent begins. Advanced skiers love it; families should look elsewhere (transfers between areas eat 30-40 min per day).

Why go

  • Vallée Blanche — 20km off-piste with a guide, once-in-a-lifetime
  • Aiguille du Midi cable-car has views nowhere else can match
  • Real town with restaurants, shops, life outside ski season
  • Only 1h from Geneva — shortest transfer in the Alps
Getting there

Fly Geneva (GVA) — direct Alpybus / Chamexpress €35 shared. Only 60-70 min transfer.

Après-ski

MBC (Micro Brasserie de Chamonix), Chambre Neuf, The Elevation 1904

Non-negotiable for a ski week

Snowsports travel insurance

Standard travel policies exclude skiing. Add the winter-sports rider or a dedicated policy — a mountain rescue can be €10,000+ out of pocket.

The honest downside

Ski areas aren't linked — you take buses between Les Houches, Brévent, Flégère, Grands Montets, Le Tour. Not a ski-in/ski-out week.
