Solo travel in Italy

Solo in Italy is beautiful — just outsmart the pickpockets

Rome, Florence and Venice are wonderful solo — you'll never eat alone at a good enoteca. The main risk is petty theft on public transport and around ATMs, not personal safety. Southern Italy (Naples, Palermo) is safer than the reputation suggests but demands more street smarts.

Vibe
Warm, romantic, safe by day. Pickpockets are the #1 issue, not violent crime.
Solo daily budget
$120–180/day incl. midrange hostel/pensione, trains, pasta lunches, one nice dinner.
English level
Good in Rome/Florence/Venice tourist zones, patchy elsewhere.
Best solo cities
Rome · Florence · Bologna · Naples (with care)

Safety tips that actually matter

Never put your phone on the table

Especially at outdoor cafés in Rome and Naples. Wallets go in the front pocket, not the back.

Avoid the 64 bus in Rome

The Termini → Vatican route is Europe's most-pickpocketed line. Use the metro or walk.

ATM: bank branch only, in daylight

Skimmers are common on street ATMs — use ones inside a bank lobby.

Common scams to skip

Rose 'gift' near landmarks

A man puts a rose in your hand and then demands money. Never take anything handed to you.

'Broken' Uber / taxi meter

Insist on the meter or a fixed airport price (Rome FCO to centre is €55 flat).

Where solo travellers meet each other

Aperitivo hours (18:00–20:00) in Trastevere or Testaccio are made for chatting. Trestories walking-tour meetups in Rome are cheap and friendly.
