Kilimanjaro — Machame Route
The world's highest walkable summit — no technical climbing, all mental and altitude
Kilimanjaro is the most attainable of the Seven Summits — no ropes, no ice axes, just walking. Success rate on Machame 7-day is ~80% (vs 45% on 5-day Marangu — those extra 2 days are for acclimatisation and pay for themselves). Summit night is brutal: leave camp at midnight, reach the top at sunrise, then descend 2,700 m the same day.
Route outline
Park fees, camping fees, guide, porters MUST be booked through a Tanzanian-registered operator — no independent climbing allowed.
Serious cardio 3–4 months prior. Hill walks with 10 kg pack. Age isn't the issue, altitude tolerance is.
Trekking insurance MUST cover the max altitude of your route — most standard policies cap at 3,000 m. Airalo eSIM for offline maps and check-ins from the trail.
Cheap operators skimp on food and porter wages — check KPAP (Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project) membership. Summit night is the hardest single physical day of your life.
