Permits & booking

No permit for hiking. Hut beds (~ISK 12,000/night) via fi.is — release March 1, book immediately for July/August.

Honest fitness prerequisite

6–8 hour days with 12 kg pack. River crossings knee-deep in glacier melt — bring water shoes.

Book these before you fly

Trekking insurance MUST cover the max altitude of your route — most standard policies cap at 3,000 m. Airalo eSIM for offline maps and check-ins from the trail.

The honest downside

Weather kills unprepared hikers every year — full winter kit even in July (snow can fall). Bring a real map — the fog wipes out visibility instantly.
