Caribbean (Barbados & Grenadines)

Winter escape when Europe is grey and the Maldives is booked out

Barbados as the base, then hop by ferry or short flight to St Lucia, Bequia or the Grenadines. Cheaper than Maldives, easier logistics than Seychelles, and rum cost less than water.

Water temperature
27–29°C year-round
Realistic daily budget
$180–320/day mid-range hotel, taxi, dinners — much cheaper as all-inclusive package

Why go

  • 12+ hour direct flights from London/NYC — no layovers
  • English-speaking, USD/GBP-friendly currencies
  • Some of the world's best sailing routes (Grenadines by yacht)
  • Rum distilleries and street-food Friday nights (Oistins in Barbados)

The beaches worth your day

Crane Beach, Barbados

Pink-tinted sand, cliff-top luxury resort — public access at bottom.

Pigeon Point, St Lucia

Sheltered lagoon, snorkelable, view of Pitons.

Tobago Cays

Uninhabited sandbar islands. Day-sail from Union Island. Peak snorkel.

How to book smart

Barbados (BGI) has the best long-haul fares (Aviasales scans BA / Virgin / JetBlue). Look at LIAT/InterCaribbean for inter-island hops or a cheap $180 flight to St Lucia.

The honest downside

August–October is peak hurricane season. Prices halve but insurance (EKTA) is mandatory, not optional.
