Lisbon, port wine & Algarve beaches

Portugal travel guide

Portugal punches above its size: Lisbon + Porto by fast train, a day in Sintra, and either the Algarve (beaches) or Douro Valley (wine) to finish. Small enough to see properly in 7–10 days.

Best time to visit
April – June and September – October. Algarve stays warm through October.

Things nobody tells you about Portugal

Sintra is a full day, not half

Pena Palace + Quinta da Regaleira + Moorish Castle — pre-book timed entry for Pena on Tiqets, everything else is walk-up.

Douro Valley wine tours

Book from Porto — 1-day tours include 2–3 quintas, lunch and river cruise. Klook and GetYourGuide both stock them.

Algarve: fly into Faro, not Lisbon

Faro is 2h from central Algarve; Lisbon is 3h+. Aviasales usually has cheap FAO fares from EU cities.

Tram 28 in Lisbon = pickpocket zone

Ride early morning (before 09:00) or take Tram 12E instead.
